Chase the Fault Lines
Maynard Institute for Journalism Education - Non-Profit - www.mije.org
Studies repeatedly show that skewed news media portrayals of people of color has a devastating effect on our public policy, from issues of school reform to incarceration.
Our project allows users to see how individual perspective determines which facts get included in a news story, and how that, in turn, shapes the overall perspective of the story.
Maynard staff will post several stories on a subject. Users would be given a list of facts and could build their own story, which would then be rated to demonstrate which "fault lines†perspectives are included in the story.

Great project and great people to make it move in a positive direction toward the elusive goal of enabling all people to have front door access to the First Amendment.

Mainstream journalism has never lived up to its responsibilities to fairly portray people who are out of favor with the dominant society. Now that journalism is increasingly coming from small groups, rather than large newsrooms, it's more important than ever to get the Maynard Institute's Fault Lines concept out to as many people as possible, because it really helps people see how the news screws everyone who journalists don't see as worthy.

I'm here to support MIJE and my mentee Christopher Johnson. I believe the next step up in Diversity is to look a wide range of ideas geared toward challenging everyone in ways that are both storied and new, person-to-person and virtual. I know "Chase The Fault Lines" can do that.
