The Cruelty Behind the Cuteness

Free Range can help reduce suffering and create meaningful social change for animals by creating a movie to educate youth (target age range 13-18) about the inherent cruelty in mass dog breeding operations commonly known as puppy mills. Millions of puppies are born in shockingly poor conditions each year, many with behavior and/or health problems. Many people don't realize they're supporting this cruelty when they purchase a puppy in a pet store, over the Internet, or through a classified ad. By raising awareness, we can help stop a cycle of cruelty that contributes to pet overpopulation and the suffering of countless dogs.

I HATE puppy mills, and wish more people realized that's where puppy stores get them! My daughter has a dog from one and she did not drink water out of a bowl when we first got her! 2 years later, she has improved greatly, but is still skittish and easily startled.

Mills are just a way for the owners to get money. I will say that I really was ignorant to the fact of a puppy mill until I went to one. This mill didn't look like a mill. Now that i have educated myself I now know what I did. I am nortorious for taking the runt of the pack. The caretaker of the underdog (no pun intended). How this dog once I got her home was full of fleas filthy dirty and so timid it was shocking. I'm ashamed of myself for this and will because of this I'm an advocate for the money making slugs out there.

When there are so many wonderful, loving animals to adopt from shelters, it's sad that people still go to puppy mills and breeders. Until all of our animal shelters are empty, please adopt a shelter animal... and please spay and neuter your pets!

Someone I dogsit for bought her purebred dog... I love the dog, but I have to say, it really angers me that she didn't adopt an animal. She didn't even consider it.
Anyhow, I hope this one wins the grant!

I have 3 German Shepherd dogs. 2 from breeders and one from a rescue. Until I learned about puppy mills and how they treat animals I would never buy a pet from a pet store or a breeder. In the future I will get my dogs from a rescue. There are rescues for pure breed dogs also. So there is no reason why anyone would have to go to a pet store or a breeder. I cannot believe they have not passed a law to get rid of such cruelty to animals and close all puppy mills down.

This comment is my opinion and only my opinion. My female white lab is part of my family. If I use my family for money or as a prize fighter then shame on me. I would NEVER put a family member out on the street or ignore there needs. I'm not a rich person however I will do anything to make sure my dog, a family member, has anything they need. It hurts me to the core of my soul to know that people, dog owners, can neglect an animal. There are so many people out there that would assist you in making sure that that animal has the best. Its so easy to get assistance from the government for welfare, and food stamps. They, people, help themselves for help however don't have the gull to get assistance from establishments to get assistance for thier animals. This is one situation where there is NO excuse. God bless you HSUS.

I work very hard with dog rescues near and dear to my heart. I have 5 rescue dogs and one of them was a "breeding" dog that got put out on the streets after she couldn't breed any longer. I also have a cat rescued from the Humane Society. They are all wonderful animals who are very loving and appreciative of the love and life they are getting now.

I would never consider buying a purebred dog over adopting a shelter dog. Out of my current 3 adopted dogs, one is a purebred Saint Bernard and at the end of the day, I love all 3 of them the same. God only knows that I would adopt more if I could. Maybe if I move out to the country I will :)
