Chase the Fault Lines
Maynard Institute for Journalism Education - Non-Profit - www.mije.org
Studies repeatedly show that skewed news media portrayals of people of color has a devastating effect on our public policy, from issues of school reform to incarceration.
Our project allows users to see how individual perspective determines which facts get included in a news story, and how that, in turn, shapes the overall perspective of the story.
Maynard staff will post several stories on a subject. Users would be given a list of facts and could build their own story, which would then be rated to demonstrate which "fault lines†perspectives are included in the story.

The vital legacy of Bob Maynard goes on through the work of the Maynard Institute. I am a member of MJP '72, and one of the African American Journalists fortunate enough literally sit at his feet, and the feet of all the extra-ordinary teachers he attracted to us (Lew Potter, Frank Skinner, Stu Dim, Allan Goldstein, Sylvia Cooper, Michelle Clark, Willis Perry, Maureen Bunyan, Fred Thomas, etc.) I encourage all of my classmates to vote for "Chase the fault Lines".

The Maynard Institute proposes an innovative apporach to tackling an age old problem. Given the resources to pursue its idea, it may emerge as a big help in addressing our bad practices and showing us better ways of portraying people while still being true to the highest standards of journaism. I don't see them promoting `sugar coating,' just fairness.
